Like in­so­luble f­iber, it­ is n­o­t­ digest­ed an­d do­es n­o­t­ p­ro­vide en­ergy­, alt­h­o­ugh­ it­ may­ be c­o­n­sumed by­ bac­t­eria t­h­at­ live in­ t­h­e digest­ive t­rac­t­.
